Flora Stone Mather

Flora Stone Mather set the stage for education for women in her community and cemented a legacy of feminism and philanthropy. As an early supporter of the College for Women, the college was renamed in her honor in 1931.

Following her father’s death, she petitioned Western Reserve University President Charles F. Thwing for the construction of a chapel in his memory on campus. Her inheritance would fund Amasa Stone Chapel, built in 1911.
