George H. Hitchings, a faculty member in Western Reserve University’s Department of Biochemistry from 1939 to 1942, was awarded the 1988 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discoveries of critical principles for chemotherapy treatments for cancer, which led to the development of new leukemia therapies.
