As a thriving economy spurred economic and population growth in Cleveland, the city was eager for a university. Funding from Cleveland industrialist Amasa Stone facilitated the move of Western Reserve College from Hudson, Ohio, to its current home in what is now Cleveland’s University Circle neighborhood in 1882. Stone's gift also allowed Case Institute of Technology to move from downtown Cleveland to University Circle.
