Facility

A colorful depiction of the ISEB center, highlighting its innovative architecture and engaging community spaces.

The big ideas set to grow in Case Western Reserve’s Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building (ISEB) will be matched by the building’s grandeur, as it is set to become the largest-ever structure on Case Quad. Additionally, it will be the first to offer a welcoming façade to passersby on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard—a visual reminder of the university’s commitment to community engagement and external partnerships.

The university will hold an official groundbreaking on the ISEB in the fall of 2024 and expects to welcome occupants in the fall of 2026. This timeline marks yet another milestone for CWRU: the bicentennial celebration of the founding of Western Reserve College.

Planned Features

The building will include wet labs, dry labs, a shared core lab and technology platforms, just to name a few features. The first floor will include an open area to provide a place for people to gather for conversations both casual and research-focused.

Campus officials are collaborating with faculty to hear insights about opportunities, challenges and emerging themes as they pursue the ISEB's research focuses.

Campus Location

The ISEB is being constructed on Case Quad at the site of the former Yost Hall, a building erected in 1951 to serve as student housing and later as office space. Answers to questions about the Yost Hall demolition can be found on the Campus Planning & Facilities Management website.

Architect

HGA, a national architecture firm with extensive experience in higher education, designed the project. Campus leaders charged the firm with designing a structure that appears welcoming from the outside, and continues to convey that inviting spirit once people enter it.

The ISEB's lead architect, Peter D. Cook, has an outstanding portfolio of design leadership and award-winning projects throughout the United States.

Construction Company

Discovery Builders, a joint venture between Turner Construction Company, Adrian Maldonado & Associates Inc., Next Generation Construction and the AKA Team, is bringing the ISEB to life. The venture offers best-in-class construction expertise and a high-quality local labor force that is representative of the community.

Discovery Builders' goal is to assist local businesses to continue to grow and scale their capacity. This involves a strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, as the company aspires to be as richly diverse as the communities in which its teams work.
