Research Experience and Mentoring

The Willard Bernbaum Cystic Fibrosis Research Center at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine provides multiple avenues for young scientists to experience, and become engaged with, research related to cystic fibrosis.

The CF Center partners with the Research Institute for Children’s Health at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine to offer summer internships for undergraduates and medical students. The center also provides support for graduate students working on CF-related projects and for physician scientists carrying out fellowship research in CF-related areas.

Summer Undergraduate & Medical Student Research Program

The Summer Undergraduate Research Program is a 10-week, hands-on opportunity during which students work directly with our investigators. The areas of research range greatly and include bench research in biochemistry, genetics and physiology.

Students accepted into the program are provided a stipend of $3,500 for the 10 weeks along with campus housing, if needed, and the opportunity to attend a biomedical science research conference for which travel, registration and housing expenses will be paid.

The program is research-based, and not clinical. Students may get some clinical exposure, but projects are laboratory-based.

Applicants will be asked to provide a copy of their transcript, as well as one letter of recommendation. Successful applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents and must be currently enrolled at a US based institute of higher education.

Applications for the Summer of 2025 are now closed.

Please note that the application deadline is the first Monday in March, with the next deadline March 2, 2026. The application window will open late in the fall of 2025.
