Catherine McManus is a licensed, Registered Dietitian & Assistant Professor in the Department of Nutrition. Dr. McManus also serves as the Vice Chair for Education for the Department of Nutrition, where she is responsible for the oversight and strategic visioning in all domains related to departmental academic programming and provides leadership to support, promote and enhance excellence in teaching. Her research and expertise focuses on the development and implementation of community-based nutrition interventions, particularly interventions that utilize culinary medicine as a methodology to improve health outcomes of high-risk populations. The high-risk populations her research focuses on include pediatric populations with chronic disease, specifically type 1 diabetes and childhood obesity, and underserved maternal and pediatric populations. Dr. McManus’ expertise in type 1 diabetes has afforded her the opportunity to hold numerous national leadership roles, including Co-Chair of the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics’ expert panel committee on type 1 diabetes, member of the scientific advisory committee for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and member of the clinical and research advisory committee for the College Diabetes Network.

Prior to joining the CWRU faculty, Dr. McManus worked in an array of sectors, including industry, academia, clinical and public health. While she has enjoyed working in these various sectors, she has found the academic sector to be the most rewarding, as her true passion lies in educating the next generation of nutrition and health professionals. She does so by teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses in the department and leading a variety of nutrition education lectures and initiatives with CWRU medical students.

Dr. McManus completed her undergraduate degree at The Ohio State University and completed the combined dietetic internship and Master’s degree program through University Hospitals of Cleveland and Case Western Reserve University to become a Registered Dietitian and earn her Master’s degree. After working for several years in the field, she then returned to The Ohio State University to complete her PhD in nutrition.
