Janice X. Harris has been with University Hospitals (UH) for six years--beginning as a medical assistant and then moving into a patient navigation role--and is embedded at Suburban Green Rd. with internal medicine physicians. She and Joyce Kavaras, a clinical dietitian coach and certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist, spearheaded a Diabetes Pilot study at Green Rd. to assist UH employees with diabetes and a high A1C to manage their diabetes care. Harris also received a year of non-branded diabetes education from Novo Nordisk in weekly classes.
Green Rd. had a successful study that helped UH create a wider program called 'Milestones' that reaches out to all UH employees with an A1C over 8.4 and a comprehensive approach to managing their diabetes. Milestones is an ongoing program overseen by Dr. Betul Hatipoglu, MD, and a professional team of specialists. The program includes weekly patient meetings to review lifestyle, labs, nutrition and exercise, medications, barriers to care, weight loss, smart tools and more.
Harris finds working in this program extremely rewarding, as Milestones is seeing patients successfully self-manage their diabetes in a positive, interactive environment of care, understanding and education. She thoroughly enjoys patient contact and solving issues to bring the care diabetes patients deserve.
