3 things to do in Cleveland in August
In just a few weeks, the Case Western Reserve University campus will come alive as students make their return for the new academic year. New students will be busy with Discover Week (Aug. 15-23) and all members of the CWRU community can attend the University Welcome and Convocation featuring Jodi Kantor, the Elaine G. Hadden Distinguished Author, Aug. 17.
Whether you’re a returning student hoping to explore more of the city or new to CWRU and want to learn about your new home, there will be plenty of activity across Cleveland in August.

Cuyahoga River Rally
Aug. 8
The Cuyahoga River has a storied history—from its many instances of catching fire to becoming a jewel of Northeast Ohio. In honor of its legacy of renewal, the Canalway will host the Cuyahoga River Rally Saturday, Aug. 8, with festivities supporting its future.
Sponsored by Cargill, the event will feature tours on foot, on bike and on the water. Attendees also can join in the efforts to keep the river clean with a kayak cleanup.
Three musical acts will perform and food will be available.
Several partner organizations dedicated to keeping the Cuyahoga River clean will offer activities and information.
Heights Music Hop
Aug. 28–30
Explore some of our neighboring communities during the 13th annual Heights Music Hop. The three-day festival will be held in the Cedar Fairmount, Noble and Cedar-Lee and Coventry neighborhoods, featuring diverse musical acts at several area businesses.
The celebration will kick off at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, with a special performance by folk-rock artist Chuck Fink at Luna Bakery and Cafe in the Cedar Fairmount neighborhood. The festival will continue throughout Cedar Fairmount on Friday, and move to Cedar-Lee on Saturday before concluding in Coventry on Sunday.
The event provides an opportunity to hear a wide array of musicians while exploring local business offerings.

Cleveland Garlic Festival
Aug. 29–30
Shaker Square will have a strong odor Aug. 29–30 for the annual Cleveland Garlic Festival. Hosted by the North Union Farmers Market, the event is a fundraiser for the nonprofit and a celebration of the area’s garlic growers.
The North Union Farmers Market supports local farmers and aims to increase access to healthy food to citizens across Cleveland. Proceeds from the festival go toward food assistance programs.
Vendors will serve up flavorful food—including a garlic ice cream from Mitchell’s—while local musicians take the stage. Throughout the weekend, there will be activities for children.
