The Acclaimed Authors Summer Luncheon Series 2017 will open with a talk by local historian Alan Dutka, author of Historic Movie Theaters of Downtown Cleveland.
His talk will be held Friday, June 16, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Cleveland Skating Club (2500 Kemper Road).
The first movie theaters in Cleveland consisted of converted storefronts with sawed-off telephone poles substituting for chairs and bed sheets acting as screens. Dutka's latest book shares the remarkable history of Cleveland's downtown movie theaters and their reemergence as community landmarks. A prolific writer, he has written many books about Cleveland.
The series will continue throughout the summer with the following events:
- Friday, July 14: Neil Zurcher, author of Best of One Tank Trips: Great Getaway Ideas In and Around Ohio; and
- Friday, Aug. 18: Mimi Ormond, author of Kindertransport: A Rescued Child.
