Addiction and the Opioid Crisis—“Addiction to Recovery: Circle of Caring for Self, Others and Community”

The Siegal Lifelong Learning Program’s Addiction and the Opioid Crisis: Revelations of Recovery, Community Action and Our Legal System series continues Thursday, Oct. 25, with a discussion titled “Addiction to Recovery: Circle of Caring for Self, Others and Community.” Jory Hanselman, director of BaMidbar Wilderness Therapy, and Marla Kaufman, executive director of Jewish Addiction Awareness, will lead this session, which will begin at 7 p.m. at the Landmark Centre Building (25700 Science Park Drive, Beachwood). Events in the Addiction and the Opioid Crisis: Revelations of Recovery, Community Action and Our Legal System series are free and open to the public. Hanselman and Kaufman will explore how self-care, caring for others, and fostering a caring and compassionate community can ease the pain of individuals and families touched by addiction and aid recovery. The panelists will share their personal stories of caring for themselves and their loved ones. They also will discuss how community caring works in two environments: a faith community and wilderness therapy.

About the series

The Addiction and the Opioid Crisis: Revelations of Recovery, Community Action and Our Legal System series seeks to educate the local community on the growing opioid crisis, its dangers, the people who fight each day to make our community safe and the professionals working to help people suffering with the disease of addiction. Kevin Adelstein, publisher and CEO of the Cleveland Jewish News, will moderate the discussion for each of the events in the series. A lecture titled “Addiction and Suicide: Correlations and How a Community Responds” will conclude the series Dec. 6. Sheryl Hirsh, assistant director of Jewish Lifelong Learning, first created the series three years ago in memory of her daughter, Melissa Rae Koppel. This series is co-sponsored by The Jewish Federation of Cleveland, Cleveland Jewish News and is presented in loving memory of Melissa Rae Koppel. Siegal Lifelong Learning encourages contributions to the Melissa Rae Fund in Support of Addiction Advocacy, Understanding and Change.
