Anthropology’s Sarah Namirembe wins African Studies Association’s Bethwell A. Ogot Book Prize
Sarah Namirembe, graduate student in the Department of Anthropology at the College of Arts and Sciences, received the Bethwell A. Ogot Book Prize along with co-authors, China Scherz (Notre Dame University) and George Mpanga (Makerere University) for their 2024 book Higher Powers Alcohol and After in Uganda’s Capital City—published by University of California Press.
Given annually by the African Studies Association for the best book on East African studies, this prize honors the work of Kenyan historian and professor Bethwell A. Ogot and is supported by the estate of Kennell Jackson Jr., former professor at Stanford University.
Higher Powers Alcohol and After in Uganda’s Capital City examines diverse approaches to addiction, problem drinking and therapeutic approaches in Kampala, Uganda, where new biomedical approaches to addiction compete with other therapeutic approaches based in local beliefs and religious practices.
