Do all stars exist in galaxies?

Astronomy Magazine: Chris Mihos, the Worcester R. and Cornelia B. Warner Professor of Astronomy at the College of Arts and Sciences, noted that nearly all stars form inside galaxies, but some are flung into intergalactic space. Galaxy collisions and supermassive black holes can eject stars, creating diffuse “intracluster light.” Mihos said these stripped stars can make up “20 percent or more of the total starlight” in massive galaxy clusters.
