Avnish Gupta, a rising third-year biology student, was selected for the Amgen Foundation’s Scholars Award.
This award offers undergraduate students a summer research experience—hosted by University of California San Francisco in partnership with 14 universities—focused on health-related science that aims to equip students with skills necessary for future graduate study.
As one of 10 individuals to be chosen for the 10-week program, Gupta received a $13,000 grant to cover his stipend and living expenses. During the program, Gupta matched into the lab of K. Mark Ansel, professor of microbiology and immunology at University of California, San Francisco. There, he will investigate the 3′ untranslated region of the STAT6 gene, which is linked to the pathology of asthma.
At CWRU, Gupta participated in a laboratory of Paul Tesar, professor at the School of Medicine, where he assisted in the research of glial cell development and dysfunction.
