Professors Karen Abbott and Matthias Buck receive awards to conduct research in Japan
Karen Abbott, professor and associate chair of biology, and Matthias Buck, professor of physiology and biophysics at Case Western Reserve University, recently received awards to conduct research in Japan at the University of Tokyo.
As part of a new initiative between the National Science Foundation and the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), Abbott received a grant to work on tipping points in ecology dynamics for “Mathematical Sciences Research Collaboration Opportunity in Japan,” a two-month fellowship that took place from mid-April to mid-June.
One of only four chemists to receive an invitation to the six-month JSPS fellowship in 2026, Buck works on the design and evolution of therapeutic peptides against cancer and Alzheimer’s disease in the lap of Japanese biochemist and businessman Hiroaki Suga. He hopes to bring this technology to CWRU.
