The Distinguished Achievement Award is the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society's highest honor, recognizing sustained technical contributions to the electromagnetics field. Hagness was recognized for her pioneering work advancing microwave diagnostic, imaging and therapeutic technologies, as well as her foundational contributions to computational electromagnetics and their applications in medicine.

Her research has helped drive the development of electromagnetic technologies for healthcare, including non-ionizing sensing and imaging techniques for breast tissue characterization, approaches for treating tumors with microwave energy and, most recently, methods to enhance gene therapy through electric-pulse delivery.

Hagness joined Case Western Reserve University on July 1 as dean of the Case School of Engineering. She is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the IEEE, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and the National Academy of Inventors. Throughout her career, she has held numerous leadership roles within IEEE and other professional organizations, mentored dozens of doctoral students and earned over a dozen patents for her innovations.
