2016 Homecoming and Reunion Weekend is the party of the century for the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences. The school of social work and nonprofit management is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and has scheduled several centennial events for Oct. 14-15 to commemorate its founding as America’s first university-affiliated professional school of social work.
The 100th Birthday Block Party, held Saturday, Oct. 15, from 3 to 6 p.m. is a free party open to everyone on campus and beyond. The Mandel School is blocking off part of Bellflower Road and bringing in favorite Cleveland food trucks Barrio and Mason’s Creamery, music from Rock the House, giant games, a photo booth, building tours, a self-care oasis and fun activities for all ages.
Earlier on Saturday, the Mandel School Celebration Luncheon will celebrate 100 Centennial Alumni Award winners and inductees of the newly established Hall of Achievement, honoring their significant accomplishments and an unwavering commitment to serving others. Alumni from Puerto Rico, California, Hawaii and throughout the United States are expected to attend.
A historic gathering of current and past deans will comprise "Inspiring Hope, Shaping the Future: The Deans’ Perspectives" Friday, Oct. 14, at 3:30 p.m. Dean Grover “Cleve” Gilmore and three former Mandel School deans will discuss the past and future of social work and nonprofit management, as well as the school’s substantial impact and leadership in the past 100 years. The panel discussion will be followed by a cocktail reception. Like the 100th Birthday Block Party, this event is free and open to all.
