Celebrating Spartie: Look back on our mascot's history ahead of his birthday celebration this weekend
STORY BY: EDITORIAL STAFF
Though Case Western Reserve University adopted the moniker “Spartans” in 1970, it wasn’t until 41 years later in 2011 that we got the lovable plush mascot of Spartie. In celebration of Spartie’s 14th birthday, the University Spirit Committee—which is seeking members—will host a party at this weekend’s football home-opener.
Students, faculty, staff, families and community members are invited to the pregame celebration Saturday, Sept. 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the field beside Wyant Athletic and Wellness Center. Then they’re encouraged to head to the game to see the Spartan football team (0-1-1) take on Westminster College (1-1) at 7 p.m. at DiSanto Field.
Spartie’s birthday party—complete with cake and ice cream—also will feature friendship bracelet making and trading, yard games, temporary tattoos and more. The athletics department will host a "fire sale" for members of the community to stock up on their Spartan gear at a discounted rate (card payment only accepted). The following items will be available:
- T-shirts: $5
- Shorts: $5
- Sweatpants: $15
- Zip-ups/hoodies/pullover: $20
- Uniform top: $25
- Parka: $50

The evolution of Spartie
Prior to the Case Institute of Technology and Western Reserve University federation, each institution had its own mascot. The Case Institute of Technology went by the Rough Riders, and Western Reserve University was known as the Red Cats.
While no one can say with certainty who decided for Case Western Reserve University to go by the Spartans (it is debated whether it was the football team or by vote by athletic teams’ captains), there have been many iterations of the mascot over the years, including a student who dressed up in armor and a helmet as “The Spartan” for many years.
Since his debut in 2011, Spartie has become known across campus as a friendly and energetic figure always ready to give a high five or hug to those he meets.
Year round, Spartie has a packed schedule, averaging appearances at 30 events each semester, including athletics events, the Bicentennial Kick-Off, the Graduate Student Council cookout, first-year move-in and even a Cleveland Guardians game last year. Want him to join your event? Complete the Spartie Request form.
Seven students secretly share the coveted role of playing Spartie, overseen by the Office of Student Activities and Leadership. Students are paid for their time, but many of them are in it for the joy they bring to the university community.
Want to be the next person to fill the Spartie suit? Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to apply for an audition.
“Spartie loves meeting new people, bringing CWRU pride to others, and enjoys getting a sweet treat or little souvenir after the events he attends,” leaders of the Office of Student Activities and Leadership shared.
