Clean up your digital footprint during Cybersecurity Awareness Month

Just like clutter builds up in your home, it can build up in your online life too. Old accounts, unused apps and saved information can leave you exposed to unnecessary risks. This week, take a few minutes to tidy up your digital space and protect your personal and university information.

What’s a digital footprint? It’s the trail of information you leave behind online, such as:

  • Accounts you don’t use anymore;
  • Apps that still have access to your info;
  • Saved passwords in your browser;
  • Shared files or posts you forgot about; and
  • Old emails or cloud documents.

Try these easy ways to clean it up:

  • Close old accounts you no longer use;
  • Check your apps and remove ones you don’t need;
  • Clear saved info from your browser (like passwords and autofill);
  • Delete old files from Google Drive, OneDrive or Box;
  • Update your privacy settings so only the right people can see your content;
  • Lock it down;
  • Use strong, unique passwords;
  • Turn on Duo Verified Push for extra protection; and
  • Don’t store passwords in shared documents or notes.
