Head and neck cancer screening programs in India have been temporarily halted or are continuing at a very slow pace. As a result, concerns have been raised about the care individuals with suspicious lesions receive.
Rui Amaral Mendes, adjunct professor at the School of Dental Medicine, was a corresponding author on a piece encouraging such individuals to consult with the general practitioners. The authors, whose piece titled “Decreased Cancer Consultations in the COVID-19 Era: A Concern for Delay in Early Cancer Diagnosis in India” appeared in the Journal of Clinical Oncology - Global Oncology, also called for support and guidance for policymakers for designing and delivering public awareness programs.
