Spectrum News: Peter Whiting, professor of environmental geology at the College of Arts and Sciences, said all road salt has environmental downsides, but brine derived from oil and gas wells raises additional concerns. Unlike rock-salt brine, he said, its composition is less predictable and may contain metals such as arsenic, making widespread road use potentially risky.
