Over the past year, measles has reemerged as an important public health concern in the United States, with cases and outbreaks occurring in communities across the country. Measles cases have also been reported in the Cleveland area, making this highly contagious infection a local concern as well.
Measles spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes and is one of the most contagious infectious diseases. It can cause high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a characteristic rash. Although most people recover fully, measles can cause serious complications, including pneumonia, hospitalization, and, rarely, inflammation of the brain.
Fortunately, measles is highly preventable. The MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine provides excellent protection and has a long record of safe and effective use. All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to review their vaccination history and make sure they are appropriately vaccinated.
To make vaccination as easy as possible, University Health & Counseling Services (UH&CS) is offering the MMR vaccine free of charge through Sept. 24 to students who have not previously been vaccinated.
For faculty and staff, or for students after Sept. 24, MMR vaccination is available through local pharmacies and other healthcare providers.
Vaccination is also particularly important if measles occurs on campus. Because measles is so contagious, individuals exposed to an active case who do not have acceptable evidence of immunity may be required by public health authorities to remain away from school, work and other public settings for 21 days following exposure. For students, faculty and staff, that could mean missing several weeks of classes, clinical experiences, research, work and campus activities.
Protecting yourself from measles also helps protect the entire Case Western Reserve University community, including people who may be especially vulnerable to serious illness or who cannot receive the vaccine. If you are unsure about your vaccination history, take a few minutes to check your records or talk with your healthcare provider.
