Spectrum News: Peter Shulman, associate professor of history in the College of Arts and Sciences, said that the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 fundamentally changed the way Americans felt about their own security, from the federal government down to the cars they drove. "9/11 was a massive trauma," Shulman said. "It was America at its weakest. It was defenseless, innocent civilians being killed."
