Learn about login changes for university applications

Effective May 18, the University Technology ([U]Tech) office will update the login process for Duo-integrated university applications at Case Western Reserve. Applications that will receive updates include Canvas, PeopleSoft Financials and Student Information System, among others, to provide better protection for accounts and data.

What you need to do

To maintain access to university systems, members of the CWRU community must have the Duo Mobile app installed on their smartphones and ensure it is running version 4.85.0 or higher. If you have the Duo Mobile app no action is required.

If you don’t have the app, download and install Duo Mobile from the App Store or Google Play Store to get started. Once installed, you must enroll your smartphone. Instructions for enrollment can be found using this link under “Enroll a smartphone”.

What is changing

CWRU uses Duo to verify your identity during login. To enhance our cybersecurity posture, older, less secure multi-factor verification methods will be retired in favor of Duo Verified Push.

[U]Tech will also phase out the following multi-factor authentication methods:

  • SMS text messages
  • Phone call verifications
  • Traditional one-tap Duo Push notifications
  • Duo Tokens

How Duo Verified Push works

When you log in, a 6-digit code will appear on your computer screen. Enter that code into the Duo Mobile app on your phone to approve the login. This is the same method used to log into HCM.

If you cannot use the Duo Mobile app, you may use a FIDO2 Security Key (e.g., YubiKey, Thetis Key). Please check with your department’s IT office for availability. As older Duo hardware tokens will no longer be supported, individuals who use this security method are encouraged to transition to the Duo Mobile app or a YubiKey.
