Make winter in Cleveland brighter with these 5 ideas
With a seemingly persistent gray overcast, winters in Cleveland can feel dreary and endless. But, if you know the city and the Case Western Reserve University campus well, there are countless ways to make it feel bright and warm no matter the weather forecast.
Here are a few ideas to make your Cleveland winter better—whether you’re a student from a year-round sunny locale or a lifelong Ohioan.
1. Attend a CWRU athletic event
Cheer on your friends and classmates at games, matches and meets this winter to spread Spartan pride. During the winter season, many of the university’s athletic teams are active. Check out the swimming and diving teams at meets in the Veale Natatorium, the men’s and women’s basketball teams in the Horsburgh Gymnasium, the wrestling team on the mats in the Veale Center, and the track and field teams for their indoor season.
Don’t forget to bring your friends and don your CWRU Blue to make the stands even brighter. View the schedule for upcoming events.
2. Cozy up for a CWRU Film Society screening
Want to take your movie night to the next level? Skip Netflix in your dorm room and head to Strosacker Auditorium for the next CWRU Film Society showing. Each week, this student-run organization hosts screenings on Friday and Saturday nights, with multiple showings each night. The films vary from cult classics to childhood favorites and everything in between.
Tickets are available for $4 if paying with cash or CaseCash. For $5, tickets can be purchased via CampusGroups. Concessions also are available for a small fee.

3. Make your study session extra cozy
Most CWRU students are no stranger to a late-night study session at Kelvin Smith Library, but why not change it up in the winter? From the collegial atmosphere of the Allen Memorial Medical Building to the sunny and bright atrium at the Cleveland Museum of Art, campus and our nearby surroundings offer countless opportunities to embrace a new environment.

5. Catch a sunrise
Sunsets typically get all of the hype, but sunrises can be just as spectacular. With the sun coming up later in the morning during the winter, you might be a bit more inclined to set your alarm clock just a bit earlier to catch pink and orange hues spread across the sky to add a little color to winter.
