State abortion bans tied to spike in maternal death rates

Medpage: David Hackney, associate professor in the Department of Reproductive Biology, discussed a recent study that showed how an increased prevalence of laws restricting abortion access was linked with higher rates of maternal deaths. "There's so many different ways that abortion bans could increase the mortality rates and I think it was absolutely correct to include homicide, suicide, and drug use because those, unfortunately, are risks of being pregnant when you don't want to be pregnant," said Hackney.
