Tom’s GuideLindsay Malone, registered dietitian and an instructor in the Department of Nutrition at the School of Medicine, explained why people should stay away from caffeine and sugary drinks close to bedtime. “Spikes and drops in your blood sugar can lead to fluctuations in cortisol, a stress hormone whose job is to make you feel alert. High levels of cortisol can interfere with sleep,” she explained.
