Meet this year’s Undergraduate Student Government president: David Ampomah

Though classes at Case Western Reserve University just began yesterday, undergraduate student David Ampomah got a start on the year weeks ago. Ampomah, a third-year student majoring in biochemistry, spent the past week helping new students acclimate to CWRU as an orientation leader.

“The most special part of [Discover Week] was getting to know my orientation group,” Ampomah said. “They are a fantastic group of people and I am proud of how well they have acclimated to the college environment.”

Now, he’s shifting his attention to his studies on the pre-health track and his role as president of the Undergraduate Student Government (USG).

Originally from Woodbridge, Virginia, Ampomah joined USG during his first year on campus after getting to know then-president Amman Spencer (CWR ’25). During his first and second years, Ampomah served USG as freshman representative and vice president of communications before being elected president this past spring.

This year, his goal is to increase the presence of USG in the community and in the student body. Another key initiative is driving more awareness of the ways USG shows up for students. That includes being a resource for their peers.

“I want students to know that they can always reach out to me and other members of USG about any concerns that they have,” said Ampomah. “It is our job and honor to be in this position, so please use us as a resource.”

Fittingly, the initiative he’s most proud of having worked on is the town hall series, which allows the student body opportunities to connect with USG representatives and leaders.

Ampomah’s decision to run for president was driven by his desire to make improvements to the organization. Winning the role was both exciting and humbling. Now, he’s looking forward to getting a start.

“I know that this is as big a responsibility as it is an honor and I cannot take that for granted,” he said.

1. What initially drew you to CWRU?

After doing research into the university, I found that it has one of the best pre-med programs in the country, especially with all the hospitals around campus.

2. Why did you choose your area of study?

I have always been interested in medicine since I was a kid. I chose biochemistry because I ended up taking a course back in high school and I loved it.

3. What about biochemistry appeals to you?

I love how biochemistry is the perfect blend of biology and chemistry. It explains why biology is the way it is by looking deeper at the chemical functions and bases.

4. Have there been any particularly special or rewarding moments in your studies?

The most rewarding moment for me thus far has been when I finished organic chemistry II. I had made it through a very tough subject and I had finished all my requirements to start taking biochemistry core classes.

5. Can you describe your involvement with research?

I am involved in a research lab that is currently researching the effects of carotenoids and vitamin A on blinding diseases and the development of eyes.

6. What has been your favorite moment as a CWRU student so far?

I have a lot of favorite moments as a student but most of them come from being an orientation leader. Being able to welcome these new students and provide fun moments to them is always a highlight for me.
