National Dance Day: Meet a graduate student preparing to inspire the next generation of dancers

In celebration of National Dance Day (Sept. 19), we're highlighting one of the talented graduate students helping shape the future of dance at Case Western Reserve University. From performing on stage to creating original choreography and preparing to teach the next generation of dancers, graduate students in the Department of Dance are building careers rooted in creativity and artistic exploration.

Baylee Van Patten, an MFA candidate in Contemporary Dance from Riverton, Utah, is one of them. A graduate of Brigham Young University, she's developing her skills as a performer, choreographer and educator while pursuing her master's degree at CWRU. This fall, she'll take the stage in Moments That Matter, the department's faculty and guest artist concert. We caught up with Van Patten to learn more about her journey, what inspires her and why she chose CWRU.

What inspired you to pursue dance?

I have had many inspiring teachers who showed me the impact a teacher can have on a student's life. It's my dream to teach in a university setting, and like those teachers, I want to challenge and inspire future generations of students to create and cherish art.

What are you learning as a contemporary dance student?

As a contemporary dance student, I am developing my craft as a performer, choreographer and educator. I am performing in productions, creating my own choreography and preparing to teach dance classes in the third year of our program.

I will perform in a duet and an ensemble piece for Moments That Matter, Oct. 30 and 31; Nov. 5-7 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 1 at 2:30 p.m. at the Karen Potter Studio Theater at Mather Dance Center. 

Why did you choose Case Western Reserve University for your graduate studies?

I chose CWRU because of the dance program's focus on dance technique, dance science and wellness, and choreography, which align with my interests and goals as a dance artist. I was also excited that my husband would be attending medical school at CWRU, giving us the opportunity to pursue our dreams together.

What has been your most thought-provoking class at CWRU?

I am especially interested in choreography, so my choreography classes at CWRU have been some of the most captivating for me. We have returned to the basic ideas of choreography while challenging the ways we have traditionally thought about creating and structuring movement.

What's your favorite thing about Cleveland?

My favorite thing about Cleveland is the Cleveland Metroparks because I enjoy spending time in nature and hiking.
