National Preparedness Month: Be there for your community

Being ready means being able to help the people around you, and on a college campus, that often starts with those who live, study and work beside you every day. In most emergencies—from small incidents in residence halls to large-scale disasters—neighbors, classmates and coworkers are often the first to respond.

In observance of National Preparedness Month, the Division of Public Safety’s Office of Emergency Management suggests members of the Case Western Reserve University community learn practical, lifesaving skills.

Taking first aid and CPR classes, understanding how to use a fire extinguisher, and knowing basic emergency actions can help you respond quickly and confidently when seconds matter. Emergencies can happen fast, and responders are not always nearby, so simple actions taken immediately can save a life.

To learn valuable skills like adult CPR and AED, the Division of Public Safety encourages members of the CWRU community to request training for groups or student organizations through the Office of Emergency Management or CWRU EMS. It is one of the most direct ways to strengthen campus readiness and empower peers.

Request emergency training at CWRU.

Getting to know your neighbors, roommates and classmates also builds resilience. When you invite others into your emergency plan and share safety resources, you create a network of support that makes the entire campus stronger. When students stand ready, our community stands ready.
