Parade Magazine: Shanina Knighton, research associate professor at Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, advised that flushing with the toilet lid up releases a germ-filled “toilet plume” that can contaminate surfaces. “It’s better to be safe and close the lid,” she said, adding that bathroom ventilation and weekly cleanings are also crucial.
