Professional Development Center to offer several training sessions in January

The Professional Development Center hosts training sessions for Case Western Reserve University staff and faculty on a wide range of topics. In January, the center will begin new rounds of courses on management development and emotional intelligence as well as a Supervisor Orientation. Emotional Intelligence Series

Two sessions of the Emotional Intelligence Series will be held in January.

Part I: “Identify Emotions”

Jan. 9 9 a.m. to noon In this session, participants will learn how emotions affect and influence what we think about and how we think. Being able to harness that information has shown to be an important element of performance. Participants will learn about the role of identifying emotions, discuss why it is critical and practice building skills in this discipline.

Part II: “Using Emotions”

Jan. 23 9 a.m. to noon In this session, participants will learn about the role of positive and negative emotions and how to use them appropriately.

Management Development Series

The Management Development Series will begin with two sessions in January.

Part I: “Introduction to Your Management Style”

Jan. 17 9 a.m. to noon We all have our own style when it comes to communication and management, and sometimes our style is effective. But other times, we aren't as effective as we could be. In this interactive, three-hour course, participants will learn about the different DiSC behavioral styles and how they make up an individual’s management style. Participants also will learn and practice how to adapt their style to other people in order to increase their effectiveness.

Part II: “Directing & Delegating Using DiSC”

Jan. 31 9 a.m. to noon Giving employees direction and delegating them new tasks is a vital component of managing others. In this three-hour course, participants will learn about the importance of delegating to others, what kinds of support different DiSC styles may need with new projects, and how to talk about directing and delegating with different DiSC styles.

Supervisor Orientation

Jan. 22 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. Supervisor Orientation is a daylong session targeted at employees who have recently started a supervisory role at Case Western Reserve University. Participants will attend several workshops throughout the day, providing supervisors with the skills and knowledge necessary to start their new roles successfully. All staff and faculty who have started their first CWRU supervisory role within the last year—including external hires, internal hires and internal promotions—are welcome to attend, whether or not they have previous supervisory experience.
