Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine’s Department of Anatomy just got a facelift—a transformation that brings brand new, state-of-the-art anatomy laboratories and offices to campus. Designed to enhance hands-on learning and research, the labs are equipped with modern dissection facilities and advanced 3D visualization technology, providing an interactive environment for students to study the human body like never before.

The grand opening on Sept. 3 brought over 60 School of Medicine leaders, faculty, staff and students to the new space, where they experienced the cutting-edge technology and equipment firsthand.

Among the new additions are MetaQuest augmented reality devices that students can use to interact with anatomy holograms through the CWRU-designed HoloAnatomy App, as well as updated facilities for course instruction and research projects equipped with new audiovisual technology and gurneys for cadaveric study and dissection training.

“The renovation and reopening of the anatomy labs mark an exciting new chapter,” said Department of Anatomy Chair Darin Croft, PhD. “With these new facilities, we are better equipped to provide an exceptional learning environment that prepares our students—and all who train in our labs—to become the next generation of physicians, healthcare professionals and scientists leading in their fields.”

The renovations also strengthen the department’s Anatomical Gift Program, which accepts body donations from individuals who have chosen to contribute to medical education after their passing. These donations form the foundation of dissection-based training for students earning a Master of Science in Applied Anatomy, as well as hundreds of others across the School of Medicine.

“Our new lab spaces provide a brilliant, modern and accessible environment for our students, researchers and clinicians to complete their delicate cadaveric dissections,” said Steven O’Neill (MED ’25), a research associate in the Center for Aerospace Physiology and a graduate of the MS in Applied Anatomy program. “I'm thrilled that the quality of our new labs has caught up to the high quality of the department.”

With the unveiling of these new facilities, Case Western Reserve’s Department of Anatomy continues to build on its legacy of innovation in medical education. The modernized anatomy labs not only support immersive, technology-driven learning but also reflect the university’s commitment to advancing discovery by opening the doors for students and educators to explore the human body with greater depth, precision and respect.
