WCPNDan Flannery, the Semi J. and Ruth W. Begun Professor and director of the Begun Center for Violence Prevention, Research and Education, said it’s “understandable” schools have used metal detectors and school resource officers to combat school shootings, but noted there’s little evidence those efforts are effective. Flannery indicated that in some instances, such interventions can have a detrimental effect on students.
