Two CWRU students receive honors from the Microscopy Society of Northeastern Ohio's 68th annual May Conference

Two members of the Case Western Reserve University community received honors from the Microscopy Society of Northeastern Ohio's 68th annual May meeting, which was hosted jointly with the Society of Applied Spectroscopy, SAS-Cleveland Regional Section; the American Chemical Society, AKRON ACS; and the Akron Council of Engineering and Scientific Societies. 

Caroline Kromalic (CWR ’25, GRS ’26), a recent Master of Science graduate in the materials science and engineering program at Case School of Engineering, received the MSNO Grand Prize for Student Oral Presentations.

In her talk, titled “Assessing the porosity of thermally-cured aerosol jet printed silver,” Kromalic shared work from her master’s thesis on the effects of thermal curing temperature on the porosity and electrical performance of printed silver. She also highlighted the effects of curing stages on densification, the process of making something more compact or tightly packed. 

As a part of her award, Kromalic will travel to the Microscopy and Microanalysis Annual Meeting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin this August to present her work.

At the May conference, Cindy Xu, a rising second-year student who studies materials sciences and biomedical engineering, also won first place in the physical science poster session. 

A researcher of the Gbur Lab, Xu’s poster, "Assessing the Visual Consistency of Printed Circuits for a Smart Prosthetic Liner,” explored the consistency of aerosol jet printed circuits and their potential application in a smart lower limb prosthetic liner.

Xu’s work was supported by MDS-Rely and the Advanced Platform Technology Center (APTC) Steven Garverick Innovation Incentive Award Program through the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center.
