Upgrade to the new campus VPN by May 31

To enhance network security and provide a more reliable remote connection experience, Case Western Reserve University is transitioning the primary Virtual Private Network (VPN) service from FortiClient to OpenVPN. OpenVPN offers improved connection stability, broader compatibility across different operating systems and upgraded security features that better protect university data.

Members of the CWRU community who use Forticlient to access campus resources remotely will need to switch to OpenVPN by Sunday, May 31.

OpenVPN is ready for use and installed on university-managed computers. Those who use a personal or non-managed device must install this new client. On May 31, access to the legacy FortiClient VPN will be officially disabled. After this date, FortiClient will no longer connect to the campus network.

To review a step-by-step guide on how to set up OpenVPN, visit the University Technology ([U]Tech) website. This process is simple and should take less than five minutes.

While Forticlient will continue to work until May 31, users are encouraged to test and use OpenVPN sooner to ensure a smooth transition.
