I am pleased to announce the appointment of Xin Qi, PhD, the Jeanette M. and Joseph S. Silber Professor of Brain Sciences, as chair of the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
Since stepping into the interim chair role in February 2025, Qi has guided the department with vision and steady leadership, supporting faculty and trainees while advancing our research and educational missions. Her commitment to fostering collaboration and innovation has helped position the department for continued growth and success.
Qi is widely recognized for her groundbreaking research into how mitochondrial quality control, cellular metabolism and immune responses shape the molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases. Her lab has uncovered key mitochondrial proteins and pathways involved in Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s diseases and ALS. Building on these discoveries, Qi has pioneered new therapeutic strategies—including biologic peptides and small molecules—that offer promising new directions for treating neurodegenerative disorders. Her research program is robustly supported by NIH grants, foundation awards and industry collaborations.
In addition to her academic leadership, Qi is the scientific co-founder of two biotechnology companies focused on developing innovative therapies for neurodegenerative and rare diseases. She is a recipient of numerous honors, including the Falk Foundation Transformative Award, the Harrington Rare Disease Scholar Award, the Vinney Scholar Award for Alzheimer’s Disease and the university’s Faculty Distinguished Research Award.
Qi’s contributions extend well beyond her own research. She is deeply engaged in the broader scientific community, serving as a permanent member and chair of an NIH study section. She also serves as co-director of the Center for Mitochondrial Research and Therapeutics at the School of Medicine. Qi earned her PhD at Hokkaido University in Japan and joined our faculty in 2011 after postdoctoral training at Stanford University.
Reflecting on her appointment, Xin Qi shared, “I am honored to continue serving as chair and to work alongside our talented faculty, staff and students. Together, we will foster an environment that encourages curiosity, collaboration and innovation—driving discoveries that impact human health and inspire the next generation of scientists.”
Sudha Chakrapani, PhD, John H. Hord Professor and Chair of Pharmacology, notes, “Xin Qi’s leadership as interim chair has been exceptional. She has championed rigorous research and mentorship, and has inspired the department to reach new heights. I am delighted to see her continue in this role as permanent chair.”
I am confident that under Qi’s continued leadership, the Department of Physiology and Biophysics will continue to thrive as a center of excellence in research, education and collaboration.
Join me in congratulating Xin Qi as Chair of the Department of Physiology and Biophysics.
Sincerely,
