It is important for students to develop a greater level of independence as they prepare for college. Life skills necessary to living away from home can be fostered in young adults. As parents, you can work with your students on responsibilities that they may have never needed while living in your home. If they are not already doing so, have your student schedule their own medical appointments, manage their prescriptions and complete any official documents. Your student may need your assistance with the process of finding new healthcare providers and pharmacies on or near campus. Take on a guiding and supportive role during the process and let your student complete the steps needed to master these new tasks. Make sure to utilize the University Health and Counseling Services Transition of Care Guide.
“Over the summer, encourage your student to take ownership of the journey ahead—help them practice independent living skills, like doing laundry, budgeting or scheduling appointments.” —Moyisola, class of 2027
