To the Case Western Reserve University Community:
I am pleased to welcome you back to the campus for the start of the spring 2023 semester. The gray Cleveland days are lengthening and brightening, and they tell us that the season of spring is on the way, too. This is a time for reflection and rededication to the fresh start of a New Year, for building upon the successes of last semester, and for focusing on a productive time of work and study.
It is also a time I take to reflect on our goals, our challenges and our successes. Our goals as an institution remain fixed on enabling academic successes, on growing and deepening our research enterprise, and on engaging our community with important impacts. All of those we do with a deep commitment to a culture of welcoming inclusivity.
The world, and our community, have challenges. There are wars, hatred, social and economic inequities and injustices, and global environmental and climate changes, among countless other challenges and threats. I believe all of those issues can and will submit to the power of reason and goodwill if they are administered over time in a way that is fair and consistent. The core of our mission is to educate the people, and create the knowledge, needed to address our society’s needs and to provide for a bountiful future. That mission motivates me, and I hope you, too.
Please know that as you begin this semester we will move forward as community that embraces and advocates for diversity, equity and inclusion, condemns hate in all its forms, and is driven to solve the world’s most pressing issues. And know that we support every member of this campus community and their diverse opinions and beliefs every day.
Please continue to be guided by the university’s core values, and let us move forward together.
