Supporting Our Dreamers—and Urging Permanent Protections: Oct. 7, 2022

To the Case Western Reserve Community:

In the wake of this week’s disappointing federal ruling on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, we again want to emphasize our unwavering support for every Dreamer on our campus.

When the appellate court affirmed a Texas judge’s finding that the program is unlawful, it also maintained his decision to block new applications to the program. Fortunately, the appellate court also continued his ruling’s protection of DACA’s current participants (also known as Dreamers), including the opportunity to renew their status.

All that said, the ruling still continues the uncertainty that these young people—many brought to this country by their families—have faced for decades. Today we again strongly endorse the efforts of the Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration to persuade Congress to adopt legislation that gives Dreamers a path to citizenship.

Meanwhile, we also reiterate our commitment to welcoming students without regard to immigration status, and providing support for those already part of our community. Please do not hesitate to reach out to our team at University Health and Counseling Services if you would like to speak with a counselor; you also can access support 24/7 online through CWRU Care.

We will continue to update you as additional developments warrant. For now, please know that Case Western Reserve’s commitment to diversity and inclusion extends to every member of our community—including all of our Dreamers.
