The mission of the US Department of Veterans Affairs is to fulfill President Lincoln's original promise to care for, serve, and honor America's veterans and their families. The VA operates the nation's largest integrated healthcare system with more than 1,700 hospitals, clinics, community-living centers, domiciles, readjustment counseling centers, and other facilities. The VA administers a variety of benefits and services that provide financial assistance and other forms of assistance to service members, veterans, their dependents, and survivors.
