About

The Winston Churchill Foundation of the United States was established in 1959 to encourage the exchange of knowledge and ideas between the United States and Great Britain. To this end, it established a scholarship program to enable outstanding American students to do graduate work in engineering, mathematics and science at Churchill College at Cambridge University in England. The scholarship provides the opportunity to pursue graduate studies at one of the world's greatest universities. In addition, the scholarship also offers the rewards associated with living abroad, of experiencing a different way of life and of seeing the world, one's own country and oneself from a new perspective.

At least 15 Churchill Scholarships are offered annually. The Scholarship is tenable from nine to 12 months, in accordance with the academic program.

Eligibility

• an American citizen
• enrolled in a college or university which participates in the competition
• upon taking up a Churchill Scholarship, must be between the ages of 19-26
• must hold a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from a U.S. college or university, and may not have attained a doctorate

Qualifications

• achievement in academic work as indicated by course grades
• GRE scores
• capacity for original, creative work as shown by special recognition and letters of reference
• character, adaptability, demonstrated leadership and concern for the critical problems of society
• good health

Application Procedure

1. Connect with the Undergraduate Advising Support Office (scholarshipsandfellowships@case.edu), preferably during your junior year but no later than Sept. 1, 2026 of your senior year, to discuss your goals and plan to compete in this scholarship process. CWRU can only nominate up to two candidates each year, so there is an on-campus preliminary screening.

2. Begin the Churchill application online; the deadline to begin an application is Sept. 1, 2026. 

3. Submit the following materials as one PDF document to scholarshipsandfellowships@case.edu by the campus deadline of Sept. 11, 2026:

• Resume
• 1-page proposed program of study
• 2-page personal statement
• Correspondence with a potential lab supervisor (if applicable)
• An official transcript

* Four letters of recommendation to must also be submitted separately by the letter writers directly to scholarhipsandfellowships@case.edu by the Sept. 11, 2026 deadline.

4. Campus interviews are required for all candidates. Times will be identified based on class schedule and committee availability. (See schedule below.)

5. Following the campus interview, applications will be returned to selected candidates for revision. Selected candidates will be advised on next steps in the national application process by Dr. Raj Ghosh. Next steps include connecting with a laboratory at Cambridge, obtaining additional recommendation letters, and applying separately for admission to the University of Cambridge by mid-October.

6. Complete and submit final application by the national deadline: Monday, November 2, 2026 at 5 pm Eastern Time. Campus endorsement for selected applicants will be submitted directly to Churchill by Dr. Raj Ghosh.
