Each year, the Weatherhead School of Management Department of Banking and Finance holds an award ceremony to recognize outstanding students in the categories of leadership and academic excellence. This year, Master of Finance program students Shawn Sun received the Student Leadership Award and Pavan Mody was named an Outstanding Student in Finance.
Faculty members within the department choose the recipient of the Outstanding Student in Finance award, which is given to a graduating student who exhibits academic excellence within the Master of Finance program.
“I’m grateful to receive this award and the professors that nominated me,” Mody said. “Attaining this award is quite achievable for any student that is eager enough, especially with such great resources, professors and mentors. Putting in the effort to reach out and be engaged in class has been incredibly satisfying and has paid off in droves."
Some of Mody’s greatest accomplishments during his time at Weatherhead include:
- First place in the 2021 ACG Cup Competition
- “Best Insight” recognition in DataFest 2019
- Vice president and healthcare advisor of the Weatherhead Fund
- Managing partner of Northeast Ohio Venture Fund
- Investment banking summer analyst for Guggenheim Securities
- Management consulting intern at Cohen & Co.
- Private equity intern for The Riverside Company
The Student Leadership Award is peer nominated and given to a student who serves as a leader and role model for all students. The recipient also promotes the Master of Finance program and Weatherhead in a positive way, contributes to the community and stimulates the classroom experience.
“I couldn't believe my ears,” said Shawn Sun when he was told he received the award. “This journey is really enjoyable and wonderful. I want to thank all the students and professors who helped and believed in me when I didn't believe in myself. This award belongs to our whole cohort. I hope we all can have a brilliant future career.”

- Breakthrough Schools Fellowship
- Intern leader for China Everbright Bank
- Finance class representative in the Weatherhead Graduate Business Student Association
- Member of the Graduate Programs Curriculum Committee, Finance Club and Consulting Club
- Volunteer for the Center for Civic Engagement and Learning (CCEL)
