CWRU Family Business Case Competition

The inaugural CWRU Family Business Case Competition will be held at WSOM's Peter B. Lewis Building on Friday, Oct. 30.  The winning team from this competition will receive $1,000 and go on to represent CWRU at the Schlesinger Global Family Enterprise Case Competition, which will be held in January at the University of Vermont. 
 
The Family Business Case Competition is open to all CWRU students and all majors—both undergraduate and graduate levels. 
 
Key dates:
  • Oct. 7: 2-3 p.m., PBL 118: Information Session and Case Distribution
  • Oct. 16: Team registration deadline
  • Oct. 30: noon-6 p.m. Case competition (teams do not need to attend the entire time)

Why Take Family Business Courses?

Family businesses are everywhere—and leading, advising or building one requires skills you won’t learn in a typical business course. Family business courses at CWRU help students understand the unique dynamics of leadership, ownership, succession and family relationships that shape multi-generational enterprises.

These courses are valuable for students who may work in a family business, want to start their own business, plan to advise family enterprises or are interested in entrepreneurship, leadership, consulting, wealth stewardship and governance.

All courses are open to all CWRU undergraduate and graduate students. Each course is 1.5 credit hours, there are no prerequisites and courses may be taken individually.

  • DESN 360/460: Family Business Fundamentals
  • DESN 361/461: Building, Managing and Preserving Multigenerational Wealth in the Family Business
  • ORBH 362/462: Leadership and Winning: How Sports Teams Are the Model for Family Business Success

Student Club

The Family Business Club is a leadership opportunity for anyone who wants to start or buy a family business, join a family business, advise a family business, or is already part of a family business. It’s a great way to connect with others who understand the unique opportunities and challenges of running a family enterprise, and members gain access to valuable networking, shared experiences, and practical advice from peers and family business leaders.

Club activities include family business guest speakers, visits to family businesses, and a family business case competition, giving members practical insight and hands-on learning along the way. The club is open to all majors and both undergraduates and graduate students.
