What is What is Hepatitis B?
This disease can be transmitted through body fluids such as saliva, breast milk, urine, feces, blood, semen and vaginal fluids. It is transmitted through blood by coming in contact with infected blood with open sores or cuts. Sharing unsterilized needles, piercing of skin through body piercing or tattoos and also by sharing personal hygiene items like razors, toothbrushes could all put you at risk. Semen and vaginal fluids carry the virus and can be contracted from unprotected sexual intercourse and oral sex. Hepatitis B is spread from mother to newborn through childbirth and is also found in breast milk. With Hepatitis B you may not see any symptoms but they may develop over time. Long term chronic Hepatitis B can lead to liver damage which may lead to cirrhosis and cancer.
Recombivax HB Vaccine
Recombivax HB Vaccine is the vaccine for Hepatitis B. Three doses are recommended for full immunity. The doses are given over a 6 month period. The first is given at anytime, the second in 1-2 months after the first dose and the third dose is given at 4-6 months after the first dose. An antibody test may be required to assess response to the vaccine. There may be soreness where the shot was given that may last a day or two or a mild to moderate fever may occur but this is rare.
