Graduation Spotlight: Ethan Roman

Ethan Roman

Major: Biomedical Engineering

Why did you choose this area of study?

I have always been interested in the medical field since I was a kid. When I heard about this major, it seemed like it was right up my alley.

What is your favorite thing about engineering?

Math. I love math. I have my mom to thank for that.

Why did you choose CWRU?

It had a really good program for Biomedical Engineering, so it was the best fit. I was also looking to leave home and explore a different part of the country, so coming to CWRU helped with that desire as well.

Were you involved in activities outside of class?

I was very involved in Cru starting my sophomore year. It's a Christian club on campus and was a good way for me to connect with my faith in community. I cherish the people I met there dearly. I also was somewhat involved in MedWish. I thought the idea of working with medical equipment that would be sent around the world was a cool one, and as a BME, very relevant to me.

What's your thing about CWRU, or favorite memory?

Ironically it would be the late-night study times I had with my friends. As much as I hated staying up late, it was a time for serious bonding as we all struggled with our schoolwork while on an endless diet of Den mozzarella sticks.

What advice/encouragement would you like to share with current students?

REALLY think about what you want to be doing with your life. It's ok to not like your major and still be passionate about the stuff involved in it (speaking from experience). But also, if you don't like your major AND you don't like what you're learning, SWITCH. Do not feel pressured to have the hardest major just so you can brag and put some pride in yourself. It's not healthy, nor is it worth it.

What are your plans after graduation?

At this point I'm not entirely sure. I'm applying for jobs in the BME industry but I'm also considering a career switch. Worst case scenario I have to live with my mom until I get a job in a different career. I have a lot of possible paths, so we'll have to see.
