Dear Colleagues,
I am sorry to share news of the passing of our esteemed colleague, role model and friend, Dr. David Schiraldi, professor and former chair of the Department of Macromolecular Science and Engineering.
Dave served our school for 18 years with unwavering dedication as a researcher, educator, and leader. His contributions to the field of aerogels and polymer science earned him national recognition, and his mentorship shaped the careers of students and faculty alike. A passionate supporter of the community outreach program Envoys, Dave created innovative opportunities and opened doors to engineering education for students from underserved communities.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dave was valued as a kind and thoughtful colleague who was generous with his time and wisdom even after transitioning to an emeritus appointment in 2020. Some of the people who knew him best have shared the following remembrances:
"He was not only my first supervisor in the U.S. but also a remarkable mentor who supported me immensely, both academically and personally."
"Professor Schiraldi was one of the most engaging and thoughtful members of our department. I will always remember his wine classes—how generously he shared not only the wine from his own collection, but also his passion for teaching us about the grapes, the regions, and the stories behind them. His warmth and humor made those gatherings special."
"I think when you start a new position and are feeling your way along, the first person who reaches out to you with friendship can make a lasting impression. For me, Dave was that person when I first came to the School of Engineering. As time went on, I grew to admire his dedication to education – “Of course, we can teach chemical principles to inner-city high school students who have no access to lab experience – in fact, I will prove it,” he said, and did. I admired his intellect and dedication to research, and his unwavering support of his students and colleagues. Dave became not only a valued professional associate, but also a treasured friend. I will miss him deeply."
"To be mentored by Professor Schiraldi was to carry an unshakable belief: You Can and You Will. So many times, with just one encouraging word or a steady look, he made me feel that I can jump to the moon. He never dismissed me or any of my thoughts, and he always urged me to try it out. In moments of difficulty after my graduation, I can just see him in front of me, with his eyes full of trust and strength, I find the courage to move forward instantly. His faith in us lives on, guiding us long through our life."
"Dave Schiraldi knew what it meant to be a professor and lived it daily. He gave his energy to everything important, with excellence in teaching, research, mentoring, and professional service. He will remain a role model for all of us."
Dave leaves quite a legacy with those of us who had the chance to know him. The Case Alumni Association will be sharing a tribute including this video, created when Dave received their award for Meritorious Service in 2013.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, closest colleagues, and all those whose lives he touched. His presence in our community will be deeply missed.
With sympathy,
Christian A. Zorman, Ph.D.
