CLEVELAND KUH Summer Research Fellowship
The Cleveland KUH Summer Research Fellowship is an 8-week (June-August), summer research program that provides undergraduates students with opportunities to perform basic and clinical biomedical research that focus to kidney, benign urological and benign blood cell function and pathobiology. The research is conducted under the guidance of Cleveland State University and Case Western Reserve University research mentors.
What is Cleveland KUH Summer Research Fellowship?
Funded with a National Institutes of Health (NIH) training award, the eight-week summer Kidney Urology and Hematology (KUH) fellowship is open to undergraduate students. As a KUH Summer Research Fellow, you gain hands-on experience in research laboratories to develop the following skills:
- review research papers in basic and clinical science.
- execute bench or human research projects by learning the rationale, design, methods and data analysis necessary to achieve project goals.
- participate in the intellectual life of a research lab.
- write clear, concise research abstracts and papers.
- present research projects in a clear and precise manner in research group meetings, seminars and poster sessions.
Fellows also participate in weekly journal clubs and attend seminars on topics including translational research in progress, scientific integrity and the responsible conduct of research, and how to present at a journal club. At the completion of the summer fellowship, the scholar is required to give a brief oral presentation to Cleveland KUH community on their summer research activities.
Who can apply?
Each summer, the Cleveland KUH Summer Research Fellowship will recruit 1-2 undergraduate students from the institutions in Northeastern Ohio. Students from outside the region are welcome to apply, but funds are not available to support housing and living expenses beyond the $7,500 stipend offered by the Program. Ideally, the successful candidate will express an interest in becoming a research-active MD of PhD specializing in KUH research, but given the student population, interest in any form of medical/biomedical research (science or engineering) is desired.
We especially seek participation from under-represented STEM students, for example: McNair Scholars, Choose Ohio First scholars, and students who have transferred to CSU from a Community College

IS there a deadline?
The online application is due on March 1. Successful applicants will be notified by April 1.
WHAT KIND OF RESEARCH WILL I BE WORKING ON?
The research labs participating in the program are located at Cleveland State University, Case Western Reserve University, the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals/Cleveland Medical Center, the MetroHealth System and the Stokes Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The scientific interests of participating laboratories includes physiology, immunology, kidney diseases (nephrology), blood cell function (hematology), urinary tract function in health and disease (urology) to tissue engineering, machine learning and regenerative medicine. DO I NEED TO HAVE PRIOR RESEARCH EXPERIENCE?
While prior research experience is not necessary, the application process is competitive and prior research experience could be a factor in admission
IS HOUSING AVAILABLE?
No.
IS THERE A STYPEND?
A $7,500 stipend will be provided as a single check payment at the completion of the program.
IS THIS PROGRAM ONLY FOR CWRU or CSU STUDENTS?
No. The program accepts application from all undergraduate students enrolled at any institution.
DO I GET ACADEMIC CREDIT FOR PARTICIPATING?
No.
ARE THERE ANY OFFICIAL COURSES?
There will be one formal class on Responsible Conduct of Research. There will also be several didactic programs that are jointly administered with other summer research programs at CWRU and CSU. These may include scientific seminars, research presentations, and journal clubs where research papers will be discussed.
DO I REALLY NEED TO BE AT THE PROGRAM FROM 9:00AM TO 5:00PM EVERY WEEKDAY?
