Art History’s Erin Benay pens book about Caravaggio altarpiece

Erin Benay, the Climo Assistant Professor of Italian Renaissance and Baroque Art, published her second monograph, titled Exporting Caravaggio: the Crucifixion of Saint Andrew in the Cleveland Museum of Art. The book takes one important painting as a point of departure to consider the ways in which the mobility of objects impacts their interpretation today.

About the book

The Crucifixion of Saint Andrew by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, displayed in the Cleveland Museum of Art, is one of just seven Caravaggio paintings in U.S. collections and the only altarpiece. It exemplifies the influential tenebristic style the artist developed during his rise to fame in Rome, while signaling the introduction of an even grittier realism in his work. This is the first book-length publication to consider this understudied masterwork in its complex historical and geographic contexts and to incorporate the findings of the painting’s recent conservation in its assessment of the work.
