Courses on oyster mushroom production, honey bees offered at the University Farm this winter

Due to popular demand, the University Farm recently added additional installments of two of its classes this winter: “Basics of Oyster Mushroom Production” and “ABCs of Honey Bees.” Learn more about courses at the University Farm at students.case.edu/farm/education/continuing.html.

"Basics of Oyster Mushroom Production"

The three-hour course will be offered from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9. The cost is $50. This hands-on learning experience will cover:

• The economics;
• Growing requirements;
• Equipment needed;
• Sterilization;
• Potential problems;
• Packaging; and
• Harvesting.

Participants will be taught how to make a miniature mushroom bag to take home. The class will be limited to 12 students (five minimum to offer class). “ABCs of Honey Bees”

This one-day, four-hour course will be offered Saturday, March 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The course will cover all aspects of beginning beekeeping, honey bee biology and diseases, and hive management. Richard Manley, beekeeping consultant at the University Farm for more than five years and Board of Health inspector for Geauga County, will lead the course. The course fee is $60 per participant. A minimum of five participants will be required to offer course. You must be registered to attend.
