1940s
Nancy Kurfess Johnson (FSM ’49; MED ’54; GRS ’98, bioethics) received the Academy of Medicine of Cleveland and Northern Ohio Legacy Award for a trailblazing 50-year medical career as an obstetrician-gynecologist. Johnson lives in Bratenahl, Ohio.
1950s
Abe Bergman (MED ’58) was honored with a posthumous Washington Medal of Merit for his work in child safety rights advocacy. The medal recognizes a civilian for service to the State of Washington. Bergman, who worked as a professor and pediatrician and died in November 2023, aided in the passage of federal legislation that, for example, required manufacturers of children’s sleepwear to make their products flame-retardant and mandated the sale of childproof medication containers. Bergman lived in Seattle.
1960s
John Vacha (ADL ’60; GRS ’67, history), of Lakewood, Ohio, authored Playhouse Square and the Cleveland Renaissance (Kent State University Press), an account of the effort to revitalize the Cleveland theater district in the 1970s and how its revival gave the city a boost.
Audrey Dvorak (GRS ’64, education) began teaching fifth grade in 1956 in Maple Heights, Ohio, and has spent the last 65 years in the classroom. Dvorak received recognition for her teaching about the U.S. Constitution from the National Parent Teacher Association in 1988. After retiring in 1999, she became a substitute teacher. Dvorak remains in that role and celebrated her 90th birthday in May. She lives in Gates Mills, Ohio.
P. Hunter Peckham (GRS ’68, ’72, biomedical engineering) received an honorary doctor of science degree from Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York, for his work advancing spinal cord injury rehabilitation research. He also gave the commencement address. Peckham is the co-director of the Metro- Health Rehabilitation Institute at MetroHealth Medical Center. At Case Western Reserve, he is a Distinguished University Professor Emeritus, the Donnell Institute Professor Emeritus and a professor of biomedical engineering emeritus.
1970s
Steven Keenholtz (ADL ’72, MED ’76), of Marblehead, Massachusetts, received the 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Essex South District of the Massachusetts Medical Society for a medical career that has spanned four decades.
David Gaynon (LYS ’74), of Beaverton, Oregon, is a member of the board and curriculum chair of the Senior Studies Institute, which is affiliated with Portland Community College and provides social opportunities and lectures for its members.
Robin Bozian (LAW ’77), of Cutler, Ohio, received the 2024 Presidential Award from the Ohio Access to Justice Foundation. She was recognized for her leadership of legal clinics in Southeastern Ohio, work to support individuals experiencing domestic violence and service on the board of the Washington County Homeless Project. The award honors efforts to improve access to legal representation and information in the state.
1980s
Bill Schwab (MED ’80) received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Leadership from the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Schwab was honored for his advocacy of patient-centered care as well as his leadership of federally supported projects to advance developmental screenings and primary care for people with autism.
Cynthia Haines (SAS ’81), of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, is the first president and CEO of The Hear Foundation, a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania- based nonprofit composed of local police, community leaders and residents focused on community safety. Haines facilitates the group’s violence-prevention efforts.
John Vourlis (CIT ’84; GRS ’88, English) wrote, produced and directed the documentary film The House Next Door, which examines the origins of the foreclosure crisis, its impact on Cleveland, and its aftermath and implications. The film is now available on cable, satellite and digital platforms.
Jacklyn Chisholm (WRC ’85; GRS ’93, ’02, anthropology) is president and CEO of Step Forward, a nonprofit providing educational resources, skills training and other services to low-income individuals and families. She is also the author of Leadership Lessons: Notes From and For the Journey (AuthorHouse). The book, published in 2023, explores often-unconscious issues leaders and aspiring leaders face. Chisholm lives in Shaker Heights, Ohio.
1990s
Thomas Griffith (LAW ’90) is vice president of Macala & Piatt, LLC, a law firm in the Akron-Canton, Ohio area. Griffith lives in Pepper Pike, Ohio.
Danielle Koch (CWR ’90; GRS ’98, fluid and thermal science), of Brunswick, Ohio, was honored by the Girl Scouts of North East Ohio as a 2024 Woman of Distinction for her work as an aerospace engineer at NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland and her advocacy for STEM [science, technology, engineering and mathematics] education for women and girls. The award recognizes women whose leadership has benefited their communities and provided girls with positive role models.
Elicia Pegues Spearman (LAW ’90) is CEO of Girl Scouts of Connecticut. She lives in Cheshire, Connecticut. Spearman previously was vice president and human resources officer of General Dynamics Electric Boat, a shipbuilding company. She lives in Cheshire, Connecticut.
Steven Kelly (MED ’93), of Canton, Ohio, is chief medical officer of Aultman Health Foundation. He develops policies and strategies to ensure the quality and safety of patient care. Kelly previously was Aultman’s system medical director for surgical services.
Reuben Sheperd (LAW ’95) is one of seven magistrate judges for the U.S. District Court in northern Ohio. He began an eight-year term after serving as an administrative law judge in the Social Security Administration’s Akron, Ohio, office.
Curtis VanderWaal (GRS ’95, social welfare), of Berrien Springs, Michigan, was awarded the United Way of Southwest Michigan’s Excellence in Impact Award for his roles on the organization’s committees that measure the community impact of various projects. VanderWaal is chair of the Department of Social Work and a professor of social work at Andrews University.
Colleen Batcheler (LAW ’98) was recently appointed senior vice president, external affairs and general counsel of Hormel Foods Corp. She previously was executive vice president, general counsel and secretary for the car rental company Hertz Global Holdings. Batcheler also is a member of Case Western Reserve’s Board of Trustees.
Nariman Dastur (LAW ’98) received the Pennsylvania Bar Association Workers’ Compensation Law Section Award. The award recognizes an attorney dedicated to workers compensation law and who shares knowledge to advance the specialty. Dastur lives in Pittsburgh.
Michael Elliott (LAW ’98) is a partner in Roderick Linton Belfance, LLP, a law firm in the Akron, Ohio area. He has nearly three decades of experience in employment, probate, estate planning and personal injury law.
Joy Kosiewicz (LAW ’98), of Akron, Ohio, is associate vice president, associate general counsel at Akron Children’s Hospital. Kosiewicz has been with the hospital since 2017.
Britt Jason Rossiter (LAW ’98) is a partner with Kaufman Dolowich, LLP, a national law firm. He represents clients in high-risk employment claims and defends businesses in individual and class-action lawsuits. Rossiter lives in Lewisville, Texas.
2000s
Brian Green (LAW ’00), of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, joined Klasko Immigration Law Partners, LLP, as of counsel. He has litigated more than 1,000 immigration cases at the state and federal levels over more than 10 years.
Ronald Hickman (CWR ’00; NUR ’06, ’13; GRS ’08, nursing) was inducted into the International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame by the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. He is the associate dean for research and the Ruth M. Anderson Professor at Case Western Reserve’s Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing. Hickman’s research has focused on end-of-life care as well as the self-management of chronic diseases.
Nicholas Zalany (CWR ’02), of Fairview Park, Ohio, joined the Cleveland office of Calfee, Halter & Griswold, LLP as senior counsel in the law firm’s intellectual property group.
Prem Patel (CWR ’03) is vice president of the ChemQuest Group, a business management consulting company based in Cincinnati. Patel previously was the global technical director for corporate research and development role at PPG Industries, a global supplier and manufacturer of paints and coatings.
Barb Anthony (SAS ’04), of Solon, Ohio, received an NCAA 2024 Legends and Legacy Community Award during the final round of the 2024 NCAA Division I women’s basketball tournament, which was held in Cleveland. The award is given to individuals in host cities who have worked to improve and invest in their communities. Anthony is executive director and co-founder of Play Gap, a Cleveland-based nonprofit that supports women’s involvement in sports by hosting events, maintaining a centralized list of sports opportunities and offering expertise to individuals, teams and leagues.
Joanne Bronish (MGT ’05), of Strongsville, Ohio, authored the book, Risk Management and Key Performance Indicators: A Guide to Profit and Growth (Book Publishing Plus), which emphasizes personal initiative in approaching risk and provides implementation guidance for business leaders.
Adrianne Crawford Fletcher (SAS ’05) authored the children’s book Helping Hands, Healing Hands (Kendall Hunt Publishing Company). The book aims to foster family engagement as young readers think about the kind of people they want to be when they grow up, and not just what professions they hope to pursue. Fletcher is associate dean for equity and belonging at CWRU’s Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences and vice dean for diversity, equity and inclusive excellence at the School of Medicine.
Karl Lowe (MGT ’05), of Clarksville, Maryland, is a member of the board of directors of Service Coordination Inc., a case management and advocacy nonprofit that serves people with disabilities and various medical needs. Lowe is vice president and chief information officer of Catholic Relief Services.
Leslie Murray (LAW ’05), of Sandusky, Ohio, was honored as the Ohio Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs Volunteer of the Year for 2024. The award recognizes a member of the after-school programming nonprofit board for dedication to service.
Lauren Gilbride (LAW ’08) is a member of the board of directors for the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association. She is managing attorney of The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland’s Intake Department and Volunteer Lawyers Program. Gilbride connects pro bono attorneys with clients and lives in Shaker Heights, Ohio.
DJ Hellerman (GRS ’09, art history) is deputy director and senior curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland (moCa). He previously was chief curator and director of curatorial affairs at the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia. Hellerman will work on moCa’s community outreach and sustainability targets. He lives in Cleveland Heights, Ohio.
Lloyd Hilton (MGT ’09) received a doctorate in organizational change and leadership from the University of Southern California’s Rossier School of Education and was inducted into the Kappa Delta Pi honor society, which recognizes individuals going into the field of education. His dissertation focused on the underrepresentation of Black leaders in the biopharmaceutical industry. Hilton lives in Tampa, Florida.
John Knific (CWR ’09), of Rocky River, Ohio, developed the social networking app Squad, now undergoing pre-market testing by users. The app encourages conversations among social groups through customized content.
Georgio Sabino III (GRS ’09, art education), of Cleveland, had an art exhibit at Cleveland Botanical Gardens that featured augmented realityenhanced paintings to showcase an intersection between technology and visual art.
Chris Schmitt (LAW ’09, MGT ’09) is CEO of the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association and the Cleveland Bar Foundation. Schmitt had served previously as acting executive director of Ohio City, Inc., a nonprofit that works to preserve the Ohio City neighborhood of Cleveland.
2010s
Paul Hay (CWR ’10) is an assistant professor in the Department of Classics at Hampden-Sydney College in Hampden-Sydney, Virginia.
Ryan Dewey (GRS ’12, cognitive linguistics) leads the multidisciplinary art and research project An Attempt to Understand a Glacier Without Ever Having Seen One. The project consists of performance art and sculpture, and examines humans’ role in climate change while connecting past ice ages to future ice ages. The Nevada Museum of Art’s Center for Art + Environment acquired the project’s archive. Dewey lives in Cleveland.
Nelson Dunford (LAW ’12), of Westminster, Colorado, is a municipal court judge for the city of Pueblo, Colorado. He was previously associate general counsel for the White Bear Ankele & Waldron, PC, law firm.
Beth Oliver (NUR ’12), of New York City, is a member of the board of trustees of New York Academy of Medicine. She is chief nurse executive and senior vice president of cardiac services at Mount Sinai Health System.
Colette Ngana (GRS ’14, bioethics; GRS ’19, ’24, sociology) is one of seven fellows in the National Postdoctoral Association’s 2024-2025 IMPACT Fellowship Program. The program is designed to advance diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in the postdoctoral community and beyond. Fellows network with experts, connect with IMPACT peers and alums, work with mentors and learn a broad range of skills to implement initiatives at their institutions.
Oktay Ince (GRS ’15, biology) participated in the Fulbright Teacher for Global Classrooms Program and traveled to Uruguay for his field experience. The shortterm exchange program allows educators to travel abroad, create education guides based on new cultures and teaching systems and apply them to their work. He also assists prospective program participants as a Fulbright Ambassador and lives in Beavercreek, Ohio.
Samia Mansour (SAS ’17) was included in the Cleveland Professional 20/30 Club’s Northeast Ohio’s Top 25 Under 25 list. She was recognized for her role as assistant dean and director of religious and spiritual life at Oberlin College and service to her community. Mansour lives in Cleveland.
Melanie Froemke (SAS ’18) opened River Grove Therapy, a group mental-health therapy practice in Alexandria, Virginia.
Sean Inderbitzen (SAS ’18), of Rice Lake, Wisconsin, is the author of Autism in Polyvagal Terms (Norton, W. W. & Co. Inc.). The book provides therapists with a framework for relating to people with autism and encourages providers to consider that clients have challenges in accessing the part of the nervous system that promotes flexibility and connection to others.
Azam Alhazmi (MGT ’19) is a senior supervision business development specialist for the Saudi Central Bank.
Samantha Hess (SAS ’19) was named School Social Worker of the Year by the Ohio School Social Work Association (OSSWA) after being nominated by another board member. Hess is president of the OSSWA and a social worker for Midview Local Schools in Grafton, Ohio.
Mollie Hobensack (CWR ’19) received her PhD in nursing informatics from Columbia University. She is a clinical program manager of quality and informatics for Mount Sinai Health System in New York City.
2020s
Hannah Kondolf (GRS ’23, pathology) received a 2024 Journal of Biological Chemistry Herbert Tabor Early Career Investigator Award for her research to better understand pyroptosis, a type of cell death. Kondolf is a student in Case Western Reserve’s MD program.
Pamil Garg (MGT ’24) is an international tax consultant with Deloitte in the consulting firm’s Cleveland office.
